Q&A: Can I take my UNC laptop to Canada?
Q: Greetings! I am Dr. Michael Jordan, a professor in the School of Medicine. I am currently collaborating with renowned Canadian professor at ACME University, Dr. Mia Hamm. As a speech pathologist, I need to visit Dr. Hamm in order to work on our novel design for a new palatogram. I don't plan on bringing anything with me other than my UNC laptop. Should I notify the Export Compliance Office?
A: Hello, and thanks for reaching out to us. When you travel abroad with any UNC-owned equipment, software or research materials, this is considered an export, even when you hand carry them in your suitcase! In the Export Compliance Office, we review certain University-related international travel submitted through Concur for compliance with federal export control regulations and sanctions. This ensures that you do not need a license from the U.S. government to carry your items or software. This also helps you avoid getting stuck in customs and makes sure that all your items make it with you onto the plane!
Before traveling abroad, the Export Compliance Office recommends reviewing and printing out the UNC Chapel Hill Export Compliance Guide for International Travel. If you plan on traveling with any University research or items, and your destination is any of the countries listed on our International Travel and Teleworking webpage, please reach out before taking these items abroad. We are also able to provide you with customs broker information for exports valued above $2,500 or are destined to countries that have added filing requirements.
